Not directly — lenders don’t decline on crime. But home insurers price premiums partly on it, so a high-crime postcode can mean a higher annual premium.

What does “no crimes recorded” mean?

It means no street-level crimes were logged near that point in the latest published month. It’s a reassuring sign, though no area is ever truly zero — always read the trend.

How the crime check works

Type any UK postcode — a full one like B17 9AB, or just the area code like B17 — and we geocode it with postcodes.io, then query the official Police.UK street-level API for the crimes recorded within roughly a mile of that point in the latest published month. You get the total, a breakdown by category (violence, vehicle, burglary, anti-social behaviour and the rest) and every incident plotted on a map.

Police.UK publishes about a month and a half in arrears, so “latest month” is the most recent complete dataset, not today. That is the same data every property site uses — we just show it to you unfiltered, with its source named.

How to read the numbers before you buy

A single month is noisy. A burglary spike can be one prolific offender since caught; a quiet month can be luck. Treat the category mix as the signal: persistent anti-social behaviour and vehicle crime tell you more about day-to-day life on a street than one headline incident. Dense town centres also record more crime simply because more people pass through — compare like with like.
